Introduction to MOVE™

MOVE™ is a structured program that provides a framework and a data collection system to measure gross motor skills in small increments, so that we can capture even the slightest progress. It’s a top-down approach that looks at the skills an individual already possesses, and teaches the specific skills needed to become independent in a given activity at that person's highest functional level. Most importantly, MOVE is a form of teaching that embeds skill practice throughout the day.

For outcomes, MOVE offers increased choice-making for individuals by increased independence. And, as we all, know, by increasing independence through greater mobility and physical movement, better health outcomes follow.

Introduction

Sitting, standing, walking: these three basic activities and the ability to transition from one to the other allow us to do all the other activities that are important to us. But for someone with profound disabilities, they can present huge challenges, seemingly impossible challenges – until the MOVE™ program.

What Is MOVE

MOVE started as a career curriculum for use in school. Now it has expanded to apply to people of all ages – at home, at school, and out in the community. MOVE recognizes the team – family, teachers, therapists – that exists around a person with disabilities and harnesses their efforts around that person’s specific personal goals, using simple measurements to capture even the smallest progress. Practice happens at every moment during the day, not just during formal therapy.

Conclusion

Best of all, it works. It proves that everyone, no matter their skill level or deficits, can learn and grow and participate in life’s opportunities. To find out more or to locate a MOVE model site near you, contact the email shown here: christine.sarnacki@cfdsny.org.
