The Sit-to-Stand Lift and Gait Training
Rifton TRAM video 2
The Rifton TRAM combines three powerful functions in a single, compact, ultralight device: seated transfer, sit-to-stand lift, and gait training. This short step-by-step guide demonstrates how you can quickly and easily raise your client from the seated position to standing and then proceed to gait training or ambulation.

Visual: Demonstrating the TRAM for sit-to-stand and walking
Narrator: Successful use of the TRAM for sit-to-stand or gait training begins with proper positioning. The technique demonstrated in our first tutorial for seated transfers should be used. We strongly suggest you watch that segment before engaging in other functions.
Visual: Caregiver holding the walking saddle up to the camera to show it from the front and back.
Narrator: Both the sit-to-stand and gait training functions utilize the TRAM’s walking saddle. The smaller “v” shaped section is the saddle’s front, making the larger straight section the saddle’s back.
Visual: A client raised in a seated position above a manual wheelchair. A caregiver demonstrates the proper placement of the saddle.
Narrator: Using the procedure demonstrated in the first tutorial, raise your client slightly above the seat, and place the walking saddle below the patient with the ring straps fully extended and the saddle gray side up.
Lower your client onto the walking saddle.
Remove the thigh straps and then clip the straps of the walking saddle onto the color-coded clips on the body support system. Where you attach the rings will vary depending on the stature of your client. As a general rule, for thinner clients you’ll want to cross the straps as shown.
Visual: Caregiver removing thigh straps and attaching them on both sides, first back straps, then front.
Narrator: As you raise your client into a standing position, pull the TRAM towards you to mimic a normal sit-to-stand arc.
Visual: A client being raised; the lift is stopped while his feet are still on the ground.
Narrator: Stop lifting while the feet are still firmly planted. If your client can bear some weight, encourage this and, after setting the brakes, take a moment to adjust the walking saddle for maximum comfort.
Visual: A client bearing weight while the saddle is adjusted so gait training can begin.
Narrator: Now, you alone—unassisted—can give your client either standing practice or gait training.
